Every move in the Triad is a little different. It might be a downtown Greensboro apartment, a family home in Winston-Salem, a townhouse in High Point, or a move out to Kernersville or Clemmons. The movers you choose shape the whole experience, from the first phone call to the last box coming off the truck. Here’s a practical guide to choosing Triad movers with confidence, including the questions worth asking before you sign anything.

1. Start with movers who actually work in the Triad

Search “movers near me” and you’ll see a mix of local companies, national brands and online brokers. A broker books your job and then hands it to whatever crew is available, which means the people who show up may not be the people who quoted you. A local mover with an office in the area sends its own crew.

Ask every company two simple questions: Where is your crew based? and Will your own employees handle my move? A mover that works out of High Point, Greensboro or Winston-Salem knows how long it really takes to get across the Triad on a weekday afternoon, which neighborhoods have tight streets, and how to plan around apartment loading docks and elevator reservations.

2. Confirm licensing and insurance

In North Carolina, household goods movers that work within the state are regulated by the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC). Movers that cross state lines also need a USDOT number. A legitimate company will give you these numbers without hesitation, and you can look them up yourself.

For reference, Capital Moving & Storage is licensed and insured: NCUC C-2952, USDOT 3623752 and Motor Carrier #01238777. Ask any mover you’re considering what coverage is included, and whether additional insurance is available for high-value items.

3. Get a real estimate, in person or over the phone

A reliable quote starts with a real conversation about your move. Be wary of anyone who gives you a firm number without asking questions. A good estimator will want to know:

  • How many rooms you’re moving, and any oversized or fragile pieces
  • Stairs, elevators and how far the truck can park from your door
  • Whether you need packing, furniture disassembly or storage
  • Your timing, including any flexibility on dates

We offer free in-home or over-the-phone estimates across the Triad, so you can compare options without pressure.

4. Ask how pricing works, and get it up front

The lowest number on paper isn’t always the lowest bill on move day. Ask each mover to explain exactly how they price the job and what could change the total, such as added items, an extra stop, or access issues that weren’t mentioned during the estimate. Get it in writing.

At Capital Moving & Storage we believe in up-front pricing. We walk you through the plan and the price before move day so you know what to expect, with no surprise fees.

5. Compare the full list of services

Two quotes can look similar until you compare what’s included. Useful questions:

  • Do you offer full or partial packing, and do you sell packing supplies?
  • Is furniture disassembly and reassembly included?
  • How do you protect floors, doorways and furniture?
  • What happens if it rains on move day?
  • Can you store my things if my closing or lease dates don’t line up?

Our Triad crew handles packing, furniture padding, plastic wrap and rain protection, floor and doorway protection, pre-move disassembly and post-move reassembly, plus short- and long-term storage with delivery when you’re ready.

6. Read reviews for the details, not just the stars

Reviews help you narrow down a list of Triad movers, and they’re most useful when you read what people actually describe. Look for comments about punctuality, how the crew treated furniture and walls, whether the final bill matched the quote, and how the company handled a problem. One bad review isn’t a dealbreaker. A pattern of the same complaint is.

7. Plan around Triad timing

Weekends and the last few days of the month fill up first all over North Carolina, and the Triad is no different. Book as early as you can, especially if your date is fixed. A few local tips:

  • High Point: check the dates of the spring and fall High Point Market, when downtown traffic and parking get much busier.
  • Greensboro and Winston-Salem: college move-in and move-out weeks can make apartment elevators and loading zones hard to book, so reserve early.
  • Longer runs: moves between the Triad and towns like Burlington, Lexington, Statesville or Salisbury take more drive time, so a morning start helps.

8. Watch for red flags

Walk away if a mover:

  • Demands a large cash deposit before scheduling
  • Won’t put the estimate or terms in writing
  • Has no local address, or answers the phone with a generic “movers”
  • Gives a price far below everyone else with vague answers about what’s included
  • Can’t provide license or insurance information
