Why we publish our prices

Moving costs shouldn’t be a mystery. Publishing typical prices helps you budget before you call, compare movers fairly, and spot a quote that’s far too low to be real. The numbers below are typical ranges; your written estimate is the number that counts. We’d always suggest an in-home estimate – not only do we get to walk your home with you, but you can get to know us better and ask any questions face-to-face!

Long-distance moves

Long-distance pricing applies on in-state moves of more than 50 miles, or interstate moves. These moves aren’t billed by the hour. Capital Moving & Storage prices them by the weight of your shipment and the distance in miles, with a minimum billed weight of 1,000 lb. Other things that can affect your price:

  • A fuel surcharge per mile, which is updated monthly
  • Packing services and materials
  • Valuation coverage (basic coverage is included; full value protection costs extra)
  • Access: stairs, elevators, long carries, or a smaller shuttle truck where a big truck can’t reach
  • Extra pickup or delivery stops
  • Storage between your old and new homes

Every move gets a free written estimate. You can choose a non-binding estimate, our best projection based on your inventory, where your final bill reflects the actual weight and services, or ask for a binding estimate, a set price for the listed services.

Packing services and materials

Pack everything yourself, let us pack only the fragile things, or have our crew pack the whole house. What packing costs depends mostly on:

  • How many boxes your home fills
  • Kitchen dishes, glassware and other fragile items
  • Artwork, mirrors and TVs
  • Books and other heavy items
  • Garage, attic and storage contents

Packing is one of the easiest places to tailor your move to your budget, and we’ll help you choose the mix that works for you.

Example packing costs

Example Triangle & Charlotte Triad
Partial packing, kitchen: we pack 4 dish packs and 10 medium boxes $664.10 $574.00
Fragile extras: we pack 1 TV, 2 mirrors or pictures and 2 wardrobe boxes $382.55 $364.80
You pack, we supply: 20 medium boxes, 10 small boxes and 2 wardrobe boxes $397.40 $193.50

Examples are box and packing charges only; your moving time is billed separately. Your written estimate lists every box and service before move day.

Specialty services and add-ons

Some items need extra time, equipment or coverage. We quote these based on complexity, and they include:

  • Pianos
  • Gun safes
  • Fitness equipment
  • Appliance disconnect and reconnect
  • Custom crating
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly

Storage pricing and options

We offer several storage options. Storage needs often come up because of closing delays or construction timelines.

Storage in transit (short-term)

Charged monthly based on shipment weight. Ideal when your next home isn’t ready right after your move date.

Vaulted storage

A fixed monthly rate per vault. Temperature-controlled, containerized storage with 24/7 monitoring and prorated billing.

Truck-hold storage

A daily rate if your items stay on the truck for a short time. Best for very short gaps between loading and delivery.

What affects the cost of your move

  • How much you’re moving: inventory sets crew size and hours, or weight for longer moves.
  • Distance: hourly under 50 miles; weight and distance over 50.
  • Timing: weekend, holiday and peak-demand moves can potentially cost more.
  • Access: stairs, elevators and long walks to the truck.
  • Special items: pianos, safes, hot tubs, pool tables and other heavy pieces.
  • Packing and storage: whether we pack, and whether your goods need storage between homes.
  • Valuation coverage: basic coverage is included; full value protection costs extra.

How we protect your home

Before the first item moves, our crew preps your home:

  • Floors: we lay floor runners or coverings along the walkways to protect hardwood, tile and carpet.
  • Walls and corners: we add corner guards and pad the tight turns.
  • Door jambs and doorways: we pad door jambs and frames so furniture doesn’t nick them on the way through.
  • Stair railings and banisters: we wrap them where furniture will pass.
  • Furniture: all furniture is pad-wrapped and secured with shrink wrap, and mattresses and box springs go in mattress bags.

If anything does get damaged, it’s covered by our valuation protection and claims process.

Valuation coverage

Every move includes basic liability coverage. You can also choose upgraded valuation protection for extra peace of mind, especially for high-value items.

  • Basic liability: $0.60 per pound per item, included at no extra cost.
  • Full value protection: reimbursement based on the declared value of the item. Items worth more than $100 per pound must be declared.

Valuation coverage for in-state moves is governed by the NC Utilities Commission, and interstate moves by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These rules apply to every licensed mover.

Licensed and regulated in North Carolina

Capital Moving & Storage is a licensed North Carolina household goods mover, regulated by the North Carolina Utilities Commission. For you, that means clear, consistent rules on every move:

  • Written estimates provided for every move.
  • A binding estimate (a set price for the listed services) is available on request.
  • Hourly time is billed in quarter-hour increments.
  • Your hourly rate and minimum are spelled out in writing before the move.

Avoid unlicensed movers: they aren’t held to the state’s rules, typically carry no insurance, and can leave you with little recourse if something goes wrong. If a quote is significantly higher or lower than these prices, check that the mover appears on the NC Utilities Commission’s Transportation Carriers list.

Why some movers seem cheaper

Lower quotes often come with shared trucks, wide delivery windows of 15 to 30 days, underestimated inventory, and fees added at delivery. A lower upfront price doesn’t always mean a lower total cost – transparency matters.

How to get an accurate quote

  1. Tell us your moving date and any timing restrictions, both addresses and access details (stairs, elevators, parking).
  2. Give us a complete inventory list: the rooms you’re moving and any large, heavy, fragile or specialty items, or schedule an in-home estimate.
  3. Let us know your decision on packing services: whether you’ll pack yourself, want us to pack some items, or want us to pack it all.
  4. Get a written estimate. We offer two kinds: a non-binding estimate, our best projection based on your inventory, where your final bill reflects the actual weight and services, and a binding estimate, a set price for the listed services.

The more detail you give us upfront, the more precise your estimate will be.
