Fall is one of the nicest times of year to move in North Carolina. The worst of the summer heat is gone, mornings are cool, and many schedules open up once back-to-school season settles down. But autumn brings its own challenges: slick leaves, sudden rain, shorter days, and a holiday season that arrives faster than anyone expects. These fall moving tips will help you plan around them.
Why fall can be a smart time to move
- Comfortable temperatures. Carrying boxes and furniture is easier on everyone when it isn’t 95 degrees and humid.
- More scheduling flexibility. After the summer rush, it’s often easier to find a date that works for your family.
- A fresh start before the holidays. Moving in October or early November gives you time to settle in before Thanksgiving and the winter holidays.
The trick is planning for the weather and daylight changes that come with the season.
Leaves: the most overlooked moving-day hazard
A layer of wet leaves on a driveway, walkway or porch steps can be as slippery as ice, and that’s a real risk when someone is carrying a dresser. A few days before your move:
- Rake or blow the path from your front door to where the truck will park, and do it again the evening before if leaves are still falling.
- Clear the steps and porch completely, including any mats that could hold wet leaves.
- Clean out gutters over the main entry so a quick shower doesn’t send water pouring onto the doorway everyone is using.
- Check low branches over the driveway or street. A moving truck is much taller than a car, and trimming a limb ahead of time can save a scraped roof or a longer carry.
Do the same at your new home if you can, or ask the seller or landlord to clear the entry before you arrive.
Rain and storms: plan for wet weather
Fall weather in North Carolina can change quickly, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30. Keep an eye on the forecast during the week before your move, and have a plan in case of rain:
- Pack in sturdy boxes that close fully, and avoid open-top bins for anything that shouldn’t get wet.
- Put electronics, documents and bedding in plastic bags or sealed containers inside their boxes.
- Lay old towels or a drop cloth just inside each entry for wiping feet and wheels.
- Ask your movers how they protect furniture and floors in bad weather.
Our crews use plastic wrap and rain protection, furniture padding, and floor and doorway protection, so a gray, drizzly day doesn’t have to mean damaged furniture or muddy carpets.
Shorter days: start early
By late October the sun sets noticeably earlier, and daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when the clocks fall back an hour. Less daylight means less time to finish before dark. Some tips:
- Book a morning start whenever possible, especially for larger homes or long-distance moves.
- Get the lights on at both homes. Make sure utilities are active at your new place before move day, and replace any burned-out porch or hallway bulbs.
- Pack a flashlight or headlamp in your essentials box in case unloading runs past sunset.
Cool mornings, warm afternoons
A fall moving day can start in the 40s and end in the 70s. Dress in layers, and pack a first-night box with jackets, a few blankets, and anything you’ll need if the evening turns chilly before you find the right boxes. If your new home has been empty, set the thermostat ahead of time, or ask the seller or property manager to leave the heat on at a reasonable level.
Don’t forget the yard and outdoor gear
Fall is when many people put summer gear away, which makes it a great time to decide what’s coming with you:
- Clean and dry patio furniture, grills and outdoor toys so they don’t bring dirt and moisture onto the truck.
- Empty or give away propane tanks, gasoline and other flammables. They aren’t safe to load on a moving truck.
- Drain garden hoses and pack them in a bin or box.
- Plan how you’ll move potted plants and mums yourself, and keep them out of cold overnight temperatures.
Book before the holiday rush
From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, calendars fill up with travel, family visits and year-end deadlines. If you’re hoping to be settled by the holidays, it pays to book your move early in the fall:
- Request your estimate as soon as you have a target date.
- Avoid the days right before Thanksgiving if you can, since traffic and family plans make everything slower.
- If your closing or lease dates are uncertain, ask about short-term storage so a delay doesn’t derail your plans.

- Check the forecast daily during the week before your move.
- Clear leaves from driveways, walkways and steps at both homes.
- Clean gutters over the main entry and trim low branches.
- Seal rain-sensitive items in plastic before packing.
- Confirm utilities, including heat and lights, at your new home.
- Pack a first-night box with layers, blankets and a flashlight.
