Moving to a new home or office is exciting, but it can also be exhausting. The difference between a chaotic move and a smooth one usually comes down to a handful of decisions made in the weeks before. Here are ten ways to immediately improve your moving experience, with practical North Carolina tips you can use whether you’re in the Triangle, the Triad or the Charlotte area.

1. Book early and pick your date wisely

Weekends, the last days of the month and the summer months fill up first. If your dates are flexible, a mid-week, mid-month move is often easier to schedule. Book your movers as soon as you have a closing or lease date. In North Carolina summers, ask for an early-morning start to avoid the hottest part of the day.

2. Declutter before your estimate

Every item you move takes time and space. Before your estimate, go room by room and decide what to keep, donate, sell or recycle. Your quote will reflect what you’re really moving, and you won’t pay to move things you don’t want.

3. Hire a professional moving company

A trained crew with the right equipment protects your belongings and your back. Look for a mover that is licensed and insured, offers free in-home or over-the-phone estimates, and explains its pricing up front. Capital Moving & Storage is a family-owned North Carolina mover, not a national franchise, with over 20 years of experience. Browse our moving and storage services.

4. Check building and HOA rules early

Many apartments, condos and HOAs have moving rules: reserved elevator times, loading-dock bookings, quiet hours, or a certificate of insurance from your mover. Ask your property manager for the rules at both your old and new address, and share them with your movers. This one step prevents a lot of move-day delays, especially in downtown Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Charlotte buildings.

5. Use quality packing supplies

Grocery-store boxes collapse and leak. Sturdy boxes in a few standard sizes stack better and protect better. Use dish packs for kitchenware, wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes and TV cartons for flat screens. We sell boxes, tape, packing paper and specialty cartons, so you can pick up everything in one trip.

6. Label every box on two sides

Write the destination room and a short list of contents on at least two sides of each box, not just the top. Color-coded tape or stickers by room help even more. Number your boxes and keep a simple list, so you know right away if anything is missing.

7. Pack an essentials box (or bag) for everyone

Keep a box or bag that travels with you, not on the truck. Pack medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, basic tools, toilet paper, snacks and bedding for the first night. If you have kids or pets, give them their own.

8. Prepare furniture and fragile items ahead of time

Remove shelves from bookcases, empty dresser drawers of anything heavy or breakable, and tape small hardware in labeled bags to the furniture it belongs to. Let your movers know about anything fragile or valuable, such as artwork, mirrors, antiques or electronics, so they can pad and wrap it properly. Our crews handle pre-move disassembly and post-move reassembly, furniture padding, and floor and doorway protection.

9. Stay organized on moving day

  • Clear a path from each room to the front door and to where the truck will park.
  • Have a floor plan of your new home with room names that match your box labels.
  • Keep one person as the point of contact for the crew.
  • Do a final walkthrough of every closet, cabinet and the attic before the truck leaves.
  • Check the forecast, and have towels at each entry if rain is likely.

10. Unpack with a plan

Start with the kitchen basics, the bathrooms and the beds, the rooms you need to function. Then work room by room instead of opening boxes everywhere. Break down empty boxes as you go to keep paths clear. Most families feel settled much faster when they focus on one room at a time. Save decorating and hanging pictures for last, once furniture placement feels right.

Bonus: plan for storage if dates don’t line up

If your closing or lease dates don’t overlap, storage keeps your move on track. We offer short-term storage for 30, 60 or 90 days and secure long-term storage, then deliver and unload when you’re ready.
