Raleigh keeps growing, and so does the number of people packing up a home here. You might be leaving a downtown apartment for a house in Cary, moving closer to family in Wake Forest, or trading a townhouse for more space in Fuquay-Varina. Whatever the move, the company you hire sets the tone for the whole day. Here’s a practical guide to choosing Raleigh movers, plus local timing tips that make a Wake County move go more smoothly.
1. Hire a mover that is actually based in Raleigh
Search online and you’ll find local companies, national franchises and online brokers mixed together. A broker sells your job and then passes it to whichever crew is free, so the people who show up may have nothing to do with the company that quoted you. A local mover sends its own crew.
Ask every company: Where is your crew based? and Will your own employees handle my move? A Raleigh-based crew knows how long it really takes to get from North Hills to Holly Springs at 4 pm, how I-40 and the Beltline behave on a weekday, and which apartment communities need elevator or loading-dock reservations.
2. Check licensing and insurance
Movers who handle household goods within North Carolina are regulated by the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC), and movers who cross state lines also need a USDOT number. A legitimate company will share these numbers right away, and you can look them up yourself.
Capital Moving & Storage is licensed and insured: NCUC C-2952, USDOT 3623752 and Motor Carrier #01238777. Ask any mover what coverage is included and whether additional protection is available for high-value items.
3. Get a real estimate before you commit
A reliable quote starts with questions. Be cautious if someone gives you a firm number without asking about your home. A good estimator will want to know:
- How many rooms you’re moving, and any oversized, heavy or fragile pieces
- Stairs, elevators, and how close the truck can park
- Whether you need packing, furniture disassembly or storage
- Your timing, including any flexibility on dates
We offer free in-home or over-the-phone estimates across Raleigh and the surrounding Triangle, so you can compare options without pressure.
4. Ask for up-front pricing in writing
The lowest number on paper isn’t always the lowest bill on move day. Ask each mover what could change the total, such as extra items, an added stop, or access problems that weren’t mentioned during the estimate, and get everything in writing.
At Capital Moving & Storage we believe in up-front pricing. We walk you through the plan and the price before move day so you know what to expect.
5. Plan around Raleigh-area timing
Weekends and the last few days of the month book up first everywhere in North Carolina. A few Raleigh-area specifics:
- Downtown Raleigh and Glenwood South: many buildings require reserved elevators and loading zones. Book those as soon as you have a date.
- NC State move-in and move-out weeks: apartments near campus and along Western Boulevard get crowded, so plan around them or book early.
- Cary and Apex: many neighborhoods have HOA rules about truck parking and moving hours. Check them ahead of time.
- Wake Forest and Fuquay-Varina: these longer runs from central Raleigh take more drive time, so a morning start helps keep the day on schedule.
- New construction: if you’re moving into a new build, confirm your closing and certificate of occupancy dates before locking in a moving date. Short-term storage can bridge a gap if the date slips.
6. Make your home ready for the crew
A little preparation saves time and money on move day:
- Label boxes by room and mark anything fragile on more than one side.
- Set aside a “do not load” spot for keys, medications, documents and chargers.
- Clear a path from the front door to the driveway or street, including leaves and toys.
- Empty and defrost the refrigerator the day before if it’s coming with you.
- Reserve parking or tell neighbors if the truck will need street space.
7. Watch for red flags
Walk away if a mover:
- Demands a large cash deposit before scheduling
- Won’t put the estimate or terms in writing
- Has no local address, or answers the phone with a generic “movers”
- Quotes far below everyone else with vague answers about what’s included
- Can’t provide license or insurance information
